Frequently asked questions
How do I work out the cost of my commute?
Multiply your round-trip distance by the days you commute, divide by your car's mpg to get gallons (UK: multiply by 4.546 for litres), then multiply by the fuel price. Add parking and tolls.
Is it worth buying a more efficient car to save on commuting?
Only if the fuel saving covers the extra cost within the time you'll keep the car. The calculator shows the payback time for a given price difference.
Can I claim my commute against tax?
No. In the UK and US, ordinary commuting between home and your permanent workplace isn't a deductible business journey.
