Frequently asked questions

How much is car tax in 2026/27?

Most cars first registered from 1 April 2017 pay £200 a year. Cars that cost over £40,000 new (£50,000 for zero-emission cars registered from April 2025) pay an extra £440 a year for five years from the second payment.

How much is car tax for an older car?

Cars first registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017 pay by CO2 band, from £20 a year in bands A and B to £790 in band M.

Do electric cars pay car tax?

Yes, since April 2025. New electric cars pay £10 in the first year, then £200.

Is it cheaper to pay car tax annually?

Yes. Paying by monthly direct debit adds 5%.
